In a week when customer service was top of mind for staff across NYCHA, one longtime employee received special recognition at the statewide level for her service to the community.  

Donnette Atkinson, an Administrative Manager in the Resident Participation and Civic Engagement Department, was awarded an honorary citation from Assemblywoman Latoya Joyner at the recommendation of Clay Avenue Resident Association President Maria Forbes. The commendation praises NYCHA employees’ exemplary service to Bronx residents during challenging times and recognizes Ms. Atkinson for her “worthy contribution to the well-being of our community and the great State of New York.”  

After receiving the citation during , Ms. Atkinson said she was amazed that Ms. Forbes wanted to pay tribute to her various efforts to assist the resident association over the years.  

“I was just so honored that my work really impacted her that much,” said Ms. Atkinson, a former NYCHA resident who joined the Authority’s workforce in 1988, serving as an administrative manager since 2011. “It means a lot coming from the resident association, who’s saying ‘thank you for a job well done for the community.’” 

A Bronx resident leader for more than 30 years, Ms. Forbes noted that she has known Ms. Atkinson for many years and has been impressed with the NYCHA employee’s “outstanding customer service.” The resident association president reached out to some City and State elected officials to help honor Ms. Atkinson and express the community’s gratitude.  

“Her courtesy, professionalism, and respect is impeccable,” Ms. Forbes said. “It’s people like her who have led the way, taking time out to help the resident leaders in different areas. I believe the assistance she provides, you couldn’t ask for anything better.” 

While she is thankful for the recognition, Ms. Atkinson said she is merely doing work she enjoys and doesn’t expect any accolades for fulfilling her passion.     

“I just do this from my heart,” she explained. “It’s not just a job – it’s about impacting the lives of the residents, which means a lot to me, especially working with children and seniors.”
