Throughout this summer and continuing into the fall, NYCHA’s Fire Safety Department is joining forces with the Public Housing Community Fund, NYCHA’s Resident Engagement and Healthy Homes teams, the FDNY Education Unit, and the New York City Fire Museum to present a series of entertaining and informative events supporting a vital mission: fire safety education for ������Ƶ.

NYCHA’s leadership has worked for many years to improve fire safety and prevention for the NYCHA community and its developments. As NYCHA’s Director of Fire Safety Joe Terranova puts it: “The best kind of fire to have is the one that never happens in the first place.”

“When I came on board in August of last year, there wasn’t yet an educational program in place for NYCHA’s residents,” said Mr. Terranova. “But then I saw that some of our partners were putting a program together, and it looked really strong. So I suggested that we join forces – and collaborating with them has led to the creation of a really great program.”

The Inaugural Fire Safety Symposium took place last October at the New York City Fire Museum. “We put the whole thing together in about six weeks,” said Mr. Terranova. “We hosted a great dinner, we invited the leaders of all of NYCHA’s resident associations to come – and all in all, about 70 people showed up. The event was a big hit!”

The Inaugural Symposium’s success inspired Mr. Terranova and his colleagues to expand the opportunity citywide. “We saw the success of that first event and had to ask ourselves: ‘Why don’t we just take this to the boroughs?’ And that’s exactly what we’re doing now, through this summer and fall.”

The first event of this new series took place on July 15 at the Bronx River Community Center; five more are coming up:
