Temperature Requirements for Heat Season
New Policy Between Oct 1 & May 31
- From 6AM to 10PM, temp in dwelling units must be at least 68ËšF, when outside temp is below 55ËšF
- From 10PM to 6AM, temp in dwelling units must be at least 62ËšF, regardless of outside temp
During the hours between 10PM and 6AM, temperature requirements have been updated to increase the minimum indoor temperature from 55 to 62 degrees and remove outside temperature requirement.
Old Policy Between Oct 1 & May 31
- From 6AM to 10PM, temp in dwelling units must be at least 68ËšF, when outside temp is below 55ËšF
- From 10PM to 6AM, temp in dwelling units must be at least 55ËšF, when outside temp falls below 40ËšF
New York City Administrative Code, Title 27, Chapter 2, Article 8, § 27-2029
Oct 1 to May 31
- 68ËšF is maintained in all dwelling units between the hours of 6AM and 10PM, when the outside temp is below 55ËšF
- 62ËšF is maintained in all dwelling units between the hours of 10PM and 6AM, regardless of outside temp*
Section 79(1) of the New York State Multiple Dwelling Law
Oct 1 to May 31
- 68ËšF is maintained in all dwelling units between the hours of 6AM and 10PM, when the outside temp is below 55ËšF
- 55ËšF is maintained in all dwelling units between the hours of 10PM and 6AM, when the outside temp is below 40ËšF
*NYCHA follows the more stringent New York City Administrative Code requirement to maintain 62ËšF between the hours of 10PM and 6AM, regardless of outside temp.
